dementia alliance group – grassroots help and support ↓ skip to main content dementia alliance group grassroots help and support home about us kiama project inclusive communities events calendar news our stories resources e-mail signup submit a post dementia advisory group living well with dementia as the community learns to come to terms with the rise in cases of dementia in all stages of life the dementia advisory group formed to be a supportive and understanding group to advise and assist all those who have been affected by this disease. it also is undertaking a project to help organisations to create “dementia friendly” facilities. so what is dementia and who can get it? dementia australia describes it thus: dementia describes a collection of symptoms that are caused by disorders affecting the brain. it is not one specific disease. dementia affects thinking, behaviour and the ability to perform everyday tasks. brain function is affected enough to interfere with the person’s normal social or working life. most people with dementia are older, but it is important to remember that not all older people get dementia. it is not a normal part of ageing. dementia can happen to anybody, but it is more common after the age of 65 years. people in their 40s and 50s can also have dementia. acknowledgement and dedication we would like to show our respect and acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land, of elders past and present, and ask for their understanding if we transgress their lore’s and traditions. for if we do so it is out of ignorance, not intent. we would like to dedicate this web site to our loved ones and all the countless others who have died as a result of dementia, and to the other 47 million of us who probably will also die as a result of our dementia, and hope that we can contribute to making this world a better place for us all. about us blog kiama project we are an informal group of people with dementia, including carers and friends. we meet regularly to socialise in quiet, non-threatening environments. we welcome anyone who is interested in joining our group and participating in any of our activities. if meetings aren’t for you then perhaps interaction with others through our blog may suit. blogging is recognised as a powerful tool to help people with dementia maintain their engagement with life and may help slow the rate of progression of the symptoms. we want to generate ideas and discussion to help you and help others. this is a community based project to help organisations understand the needs and requirement to make them “dementia friendly”. it has been identified as one of only seven such projects currently being undertaken in the world. these projects look to make positive change for those living with dementia. home about us kiama project inclusive communities events calendar news our stories resources e-mail signup submit a post © 2018 dementia alliance group ↑ responsive theme powered by wordpress
